Wow, built like a tank. More importantly, it heats quickly and evenly, this according to my wife, the grill master. Lots of nice features. It should last a very long time if I take care of it, (so I bought the correct cover). I only wish more of it was made out of stainless steel for the sake of longevity, like the entire base, not just the doors.
Called Weber about a couple of issues and they were Very responsive and helpful. No worries.

Our old $250 grill stopped producing much heat and trying to clean the burners some pieces that were just plain solid rust fell off - time for a new one. My wife did some research and pointed to this one, and initially I was positive no grill could be worth that amount of money. However, looking at the grill at a local store, and checking out the cheaper grills at home depot, lowes and sears, as well as reading a *lot* of reviews, we went with the Weber Summit S 450, and we love it. Stainless steel on the inside (especially the grates) means easy cleaning - no worries about putting a scratch in there. Heat distribution is very even, slightly hotter towards the back, but no discernible gradients otherwise (big difference to cheaper models), and that makes grilling sooo much easier and that in turn makes your grilled food usually better. The other thing that contributes to a noticable difference in the food quality is the smoker box - throw some smoke wood pellets in there, and whatever is on the grill comes out tasting and smelling better than on any charcoal grill I've tried - again, predictability and simmplicity is the key here, you can pick how much smoke you want to get in.
If all you're grilling is sausages or well done hamburgers, you may not find this one worth it, but if you grill anything that's sensitive to the right amount of heat in the right amount of time, and do that often enough and appreciate good food, this grill is much better value than it looks if you just compare prices and BTUs.

The grill is well built... typical of the Weber name. It has very nice features like the smoke box and the braising burner but for the money I would have expected it to cook more evenly. All meats placed toward the center of the grilling surface cook hotter while the outer areas under cook. It has been cooking this way since it was new. The grill is about 2 yrs old now and the flavor bars are coated with charcoal which complement the flavor of the meat. Because the heating is so uneven the meat must be constantly moved around to insure all is done at the same time.
Just after I got the grill I tried to cook a suckling pig. Even with just one burner turned on low and some wood chips in the smoker, I had a hard time keeping the box temperature below 300 deg F which is critical for slow cooking. Needless to say the outside of the beast was crispy while the inside was not done.
The bottom of the grill is not stainless just painted steel. Although there is no rust down there yet, I am expecting it soon. The screws holding the porcelain painted plate and edges of the plate around the side burner have started to rust.
The casters are under size and I have to take care when moving it around. It is a heavy unit and the casters don't swivel easily.
Stainless steel comes in many varieties. The more chrome and nickel content in the steel the better it resists corrosion and staining. I can't find the alloy spec of SS that Weber uses but my guess is that it is probably a lower Ni content alloy. I have not seen any rust on the SS surfaces yet but there are many water stains on the lid and wing surfaces that I can't easily remove with a scotch brite pad. Also carbon has built up on the lid where it closes touches the box and it requires some serious scrubbing to remove it. Some I just can't get off and it distract from the appearance.
The Weber 7554 grill cover, that I bought with the grill, has wide open air vents on either side. Rain and snow migrate thru and puddle inside. And since we are talking about the cover, all the stitching on the cover has disintegrated. Every sewn seam has ripped open. It was as if they use dissolving suture instead of a robust cotton thread. I just ordered a replacement from Classic. I won't purchase another Weber cover.
I will not purchase another Weber grill. This was a $1700 grill. My neighbor has a $700 SS Kenmore that seems to cook more evenly and still looks like brand new.
