This is a terrific little machine! So much more than a netbook. That being said, it is NOT a replacement for your laptop, the screen is a bit too small to work on it comfortably for a long period. But it does make a fine substitute for traveling! It is light, it is quick and if you upgrade to 2 GB it can be downright fast. For work, I upgraded to the full version of microsoft office as the microsoft office starte it comes with has an annoying sidebar that makes the viewing area even smaller, and seems to have the sole purpose of acting as an advertisement for the full version of office anyway. If you will not be working on this system, then the starter version is adequate for opening and reading documents, powerpoints and excell. The screen is very bright and very sharp, and is wonderful for watching movies. The machine is small, very light and very thin, but still has room for 3 USB ports, 2 of which offer lightening fast transfers, and connection ports for AV, and hard internet. It is a bit more in price than some of the other machines in its class, but well worth it as it offers much more "bang for your buck". I love it!

I had an Asus 1000HE that is several years old and have been very pleased with that machine. However, I wanted a newer model 10" netbook with a slimmer profile and researched the options extensively. I was down to this model Asus, the HP Mini, Samsung NF310, and Toshiba NB505. Ultimately, I went with Asus again and so far I'm very pleased. For a netbook, performance is excellent and the form factor is outstanding. In my opinion, the Asus 1018 is at the moment the "Lexus" model of their less expensive (but reliably good) "Toyota" line. I did upgrade to 2GB of RAM for about $25, which I routinely do -- this does maximize the performance in my experience. I really have nothing negative to say about the 1018P. The only thing I'm still getting used to is the audio input/output jacks now being on the right side (they were on the left in my older model). I would rate this machine as the best overall combination of value, performance, and size you can get for a netbook at present. There are others that offer various advantages, but not at a justifiable cost. (For example, I love that micro 8" Sony -- who wouldn't -- but do you really want to pay $750 and up for a netbook?) I previously got a portable external DVD drive; when paired with this netbook, I have everything I need. In sum, I highly recommend this netbook. Like any netbook, it's not a substitute for a desktop or a full size laptop, but for something incredibly portable, it is fantastic.

I don't play games, work in graphic design, or crunch serious numbers, so I figured that a netbook would be the perfect purchase after my old Dell laptop crapped out on me for the final time. After a month of using 1018P, I am quite pleased with my purchase.
The build is sturdy and attractive: compact design, brushed aluminum coating, chiclet keyboard--almost like a mini Macbook. Aesthetics aren't everything, but it's nice to have a PC on my desk that isn't a cartoonish plastic abortion. It runs nice and quiet too. The temperature also remains cool despite the EEE not sucking serious wind. The most glaring design flaw comes in the form of the trackpad. Clicking takes a surprising amount of finger strength. And selecting items and dragging them? Oh man. Get a mouse.
The hardware specs are nothing special. Par for the netbook course, really. With the right software, the 1018P can easily be a robust daily computing solution. The problem is that it doesn't come with that; we get Windows 7 Starter instead. Even with pristine factory settings, the operating system is an absolute dog. It's a shamelessly crippled piece of crap that serves only to squander the potential that this machine provides. Don't be a chump: install GNU/Linux or XP on this instead.
All in all, this is the perfect little netbook for a computer hobbyist like me. Now that I've tweaked things just how I like them, it serves me well as my primary computer. However, due to the inclusion of a godawful resource hog of an OS (which is further bloated by pre-installed crapware), I can easily see this becoming a needlessly frustrating experience for casual computer users who just want something that runs well out of the box. The fault for that almost certainly lies on Microsoft's end, but it can't be ignored in this review. I'd give it four stars overall though. Like I said: very satisfied.
