In general it's a nice machine, for the $299 it's great.
But, it does NOT have full Duplex Capability, meaning you cannot
copy, or scan duplex. HUGE drawback, had I known I would've
bought the 8050 version, which does allow for these.
You can only print duplex, which is GREAT.

Let me start with what I really appreciate about this machine: duplex printing and great ADF scanning though I should mention a caveat. This machine does not do duplex copying or scanning by itself, but I fortunately have Adobe Acrobat which has a functionality that allows me to turn this machine into a duplex scanner.
However, I wish I had known the following:
* The flatbed scanner is nearly useless for me. The flatbed requires things to be center-aligned, meaning it offers only the top of any document to be aligned against its alignment guide. It also loses .28"of border as a part of its nonprintable area. Unfortunately for me, I scan lots of small, weird sized documents, some of which have text with less than .25" margin. To try to work around losing text, I attempted to slide the document down; however, because the machine provides alignment guide for only the top side of the document, sliding down the document meant scans were skewed.
* The Brother scanning software is very remedial. It just doesn't offer much functionality and doesn't allow much manipulation. The software made me suspect that this machine was intended for a small, non-graphics oriented office that deals only with 8.5x11 documents.
I called Brother to see if there was some workaround, whether I could try aligning the documents in a corner, but the tech service person was clearly not very knowledgeable. I gave up trying to explain the problem because the response I kept receiving was why I don't just use the sheet feeder (ADF). The obvious answer is that the sheet feeder won't accommodate my documents and some of my documents are too fragile to run through a feeder.
Had I known that the scanning functionality would be pretty much limited to the ADF, I might have reconsidered this purchase. Fortunately, I kept my older, all-in-one that's lost its print functionality but still works fabulously as a flatbed scanner. But I am disgruntled at having to retain two huge machines now in my small office.
Overall, the machine is great in many respects but very flawed in others.

The machine arrived in record time. Instatlaton was OK. The one problem I have is in trying run it with two computers that have WiFi. If this is your setup call CS before trying to set it up yourself. This was a major problem for us.
The speed and quality is excellant. Then scanner is marginal- lucky I have a good on. For the money I give it a buy.
