This is my first pressure washer so I can't compare it to anything I've owned in the past. That said I have used the new model AR390 for about 4 hours so far. Enough time to give my thoughts. This is a new model similar to the AR383. I couldn't find any reviews for the AR390 since it is so new so I took a chance and bought it. Compared to the popular older existing AR383 model there are some improvements to the AR390. While they both have the same motor and pump the AR390 has a 30' high pressure hose and A.C.cord. (AR383 is 25ft) AR390 has a built-in detergent tank and the hose reel is fully functional, not just for storage like the AR383. Also the AR390 has a better gun and better lances. (This info came to me from an email from AR the manufacturer.)
When I unboxed it I was immediately impressed with the build and weight of it. It's plastic of course, but all quality & heavy duty. The gun and lances are made from a very dense plastic-nylon resin "space age" type material built to last and take abuse. All the threaded fittings are brass on the gun and lances. The hose wraps around the reel, but it is permanently attached to the machine thru the reel. Another words when you fully unreel all of the hose, it is already connected to the machine at the reel end like a garden hose is on a hose reel. It works very well, I just hope it won't become a weak point down the road? A main reviewer complaint with the AR383 was leaking at the hose connector. This unit has a screw on clear plastic male quick disconnect that doubles as a filter. If you see the water filter is clogging just take it off and run water thru it in reverse to clear the filter out. It comes with the plastic female quick disconnect for your hose end. I screwed the male/filter end firmly to the machine (note: the machine's threaded end is metal) and attached the other female plastic quick disconnect to my garden hose. I experienced no leaking at the connection during the 4 hours I used it. I was a little disappointed that it didn't have more power. If you need to clean your entire driveway and side walks before putting down sealer you probably won't be happy using this for that big of a job. I will probably rent a gas powered one to make that go quicker. For cleaning the patio furniture, siding, lawn mower, paving stone patio, car, truck, etc. it works great. I thought the turbo attachment worked best for larger flat surfaces like my paverstone patio. I found AR North America (the manufacturer) was great answering all my questions before I bought and very nice. Pressure Washers Direct.com was very helpful too. They answered my questions and I could not believe how fast they shipped to me. I had it within 24 hours of placing my order and with free shipping! The only question I still have is how exactly how to use the built in detergent dispenser. The owners manual is not the best.
Over all I am very pleased with this so far. I will update if I discover any problems.

I have never owned a pressure washer, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I really love the hose reel and the accessories. I used it recently to clean my deck and it worked great. Enough power to get the job done. Seems to be a good quality product.

(***Update 7/30/11 -- my replacement AR390 just bit the dust in a huge cloud of acrid smoke that wafted around our yard and into the house. Emails are in to the seller (Beach Camera) and AR North America for a resolution. I'm a bit gun shy to try out yet another AR390, but I'll wait to talk to their company rep first. I'll update this review later.)
(***Update 8/2/11 -- AR North America (the manufacturer) replied, "We have a bad batch of 390s that have surfaced through a number of customers like yourself. We are tracking down the problem as I write this email to you. And we are fixing the problem." I am going to proceed through the return process, await the fix, and will update this review. In the mean time I'll let my review stand unchanged, including my 4-star rating, and give AR North America the benefit of the doubt that this was simply a hiccup in their production process that will be satisfactorily corrected.)
(** Update 8/24/11) -- I've been in possession of my 3rd AR390 for a week. AR North America handled the exchange directly, and reportedly "tested" the unit before shipping it to me. But they admit they don't know what the cause of the problem is yet, they're experiencing about a 5% return rate, and they are committed to working with me if any such problems crop up with this unit. For what it's worth, Beach Camera, the original seller who handled the first exchange, was completely non-responsive to repeated emails regarding this second unit failure. I'll be back to re-edit this review once I'm reasonably comfortable that the current unit is performing adequately, or if I receive updated information from AR.)
I tried to identify the differences between this and the popular AR383, and came up with the following:
(1) Pump power/output is approximately identical, and both are listed as utilizing a tri-axial water-cooled pump; I suspect they're the same internals, though my question to AR North America went unanswered.
(2) The coiled hose of the AR383 is distinctly listed as "storage only / non-functional" (meaning it is supposed to be completely uncoiled before use) whereas any references to this in the 390 literature and website are removed, indicating (to me) that the unused hose may remain coiled during use.
(3) The AR390's wand is definitely different compared to the wand pictured with the AR383 photos; I can't comment on the AR383 wand, but the AR390's wand is unexpectedly heavy-duty with quality rubber-covering-metal construction.
(4) The AR390 is 5 to 6 inches taller than the AR383, making the handle & wheels slightly more useable.
(5) It seems, from the various reviews, that many of the hose connections (including the inclusion of an inline water filter at the hose connection point) have been improved, are less prone to leakage, and easier to service.
(6) The AR390 unit weight is 10 pounds heavier. I suspect some of that weight is because of the wand.
(7) The AR390 has a built-in detergent tank (with a ratio mixer knob on the front); the AR383 ships with a dispenser that clips on to the wand.
The AR390 comes mostly assembled. All that's necessary is to attach the "gun" to the hose, and to secure one of the two included wand extensions ("lances" -- an adjustable fan spray lance with high/low flow, and a fixed-output pulsating "Turbo" blaster are included). There's also a cord wrap / wand holder to screw to the base using four included phillips-head screws, and an inline filter that threads on to the base of the unit.
The gun and wands feel like quality, durable construction. I see brass connections and outlet nozzles, and they are constructed of high-impact plastic and metal construction covered with plastic and rubber. Hose connections are tight, and there's no leakage or dripping to speak from from any of the wand connections.
The electrical cord wrap isn't well thought out. There's barely enough wrap capacity to store the entire length of the cord if wrapped neatly, and there is not place to stash the large "wall wart" GFCI cord end securely. The extension wands can't be holstered while the cord is being wrapped without being in the way.
Toting this unit around is just a little awkward. Handle height is 33", so as a 6-footer, I've got to stoop a bit to tilt it and wheel it. Stairs? Forgetabboudit -- just pick it up and carry it. It's light enough to be carryable, yet given the option I'd rather wheel it.
The power cord is about 35 feet long, but includes a very, very large (~4�" high x 2" wide) "wall wart" style GFCI connector that makes it difficult if not impossible to plug in to standard weather-proof outdoor electrical boxes. The cord is labeled as 14 gauge. Some of the AR383 reviews indicate there is a manufacturer restriction against using an extension cord with this unit. The warning label on the side says not to use an extension cord "if the cord is damaged." Conflictingly, the manual says "Never use an extension cord with this product." I'd recommend at least a 12 gauge cord if extra length is needed, or a 14ga pigtail if only a short extension is necessary to make this work with an outdoor outlet box.
The included "plastic/PVC" water hose is a bit stiff, but I only find this to be a bit of an inconvenience when reeling it in. During use, this wasn't really a problem and the hose is relatively kink resistant while being dragged around the patio.
My garden hose screws to an included snap-on quick-connect adapter. The plastic adapter is the type with the auto water cut-off, meaning it can be disconnected without shutting off the faucet. The adapter, with a click, connects to a filter that threads on at the base of the pressure washer. With that done, all that's left is the power switch -- unless detergent is being used. If that's the case, there's a small chemical tank on the back side of the pressure washer, and a dial on the face controls the flowage rate.
There is minimal leakage from the unit in the area of the garden hose connection. It develops a very small wet spot underneath it after sitting with the garden hose spigot open. A reviewer of the AR383 mentioned opening the hose spigot only half way to prevent leakage, and I suspect this is worth trying if the leakage is a problem, as the pressure sprayer's flow rate of 1.6 gallons per minute are far less than a garden hose's 20+ gallons per minute when fully open. On the other hand, the "leakage" was so minor (just a wet spot, not a spray or even a noticeable drip) that I'm not overly concerned about addressing it.
The unit incorporates a flow sensor that starts and stops the compressor motor whenever flow is detected, so whenever the spray gun's trigger is released, the motor **usually** stops nearly instantly. I experienced a few instances where I completely lost pressure at the gun, but the motor continued to run continuously. Shutting off the unit, spraying the gun using just water supply head pressure, then restarting the unit seemed to fix this. This problem happened three times in a row during my second usage, but hasn't happened again.
When the pump is running, it's a little noisy, though not quite "loud," and not exactly high-pitched, either. So you may disturb, but won't annoy, your neighbors.
Pressure is great for what I was doing: cleaning clay soil from the concrete patio, knocking down some hard dirt in the narrow planter bed, blasting out some drain holes at the base of a retaining wall, and cleaning mildew stains from a filthy plastic & tile bathroom shower. The adjustable wand has not only a variable sweep spray pattern, but also a high/low pressure setting that takes down the flow rate for work on delicate surfaces -- all tool-free adjustments. The "Turbo" wand spits out a narrowly focused, non-adjustable cone of water whose spray pattern appears to "rotate" when sprayed against the patio.
I've compiled a "don't like" list of a number of items that could be easily addressed in future models, which might earn it a 5-star rating from me. They are:
- The cord wrap is poorly thought out and largely unusable. For one, more capacity is required to store the 35+ feet of cord. For another, this large GFCI "wall wart" power connector needs a dedicated holster because it's too large and heavy to be left to dangle, or to intertwine with the already-wrapped cord.
- The cord wrap attachment also is intended to be wand storage, but as best I can figure out, there's only room for one nozzle end plus the "gun". This screwed-on plastic piece needs to be redesigned to hold all three pieces.
- Although this AR390 has grown in height, it's still by far too short to be wheeled around comfortably -- especially on stairs. A built-in extendable handle would be appreciated, like what's found with roll-behind suitcases and some wheelable tool boxes.
- This unit tips over far too easily when the high-pressure hose is gently tugged. Some sort of a kick stand or redesign of the bottom part of the body to assist in keeping the pressure washer upright should be incorporated.
- The threaded-on hose filter is made of brittle plastic and is subject to breaking when the unit tips over. Integrating this connection to a protected area of the pump body or finding some other way to protect it would be appreciated.
- With the cord wrap/wand storage and detergent tank "added on" on the back, the unit isn't designed to be laid down in the back of a car for transport. I'd also like to see a drain port to empty all (or at least most) of the water out of the pump.
I also need to mention that this review is a partial re-write. I initially rated this product two stars ("don't like") because with my first unit, the motor burned up after 10 minutes of use: the output pressure suddenly tapered off, followed by smoke wafting from the vent ports accompanied by the acrid odor of burned plastic. Looking over the 116 reviews of the AR383, there appear to be just a handful of instances where the units burned up on the first use (or within the first few uses). But by far the majority of reviews experienced no such problem, so I presume the problem with my first unit was a fluke. AR North America and the seller (in my case, Beach Camera via Amazon) handled the return quickly and emailed me a prepaid return shipping label.
For the next month (the seller's return window), I will continue to purposely "overuse" my AR390 to ferret out any further problems, and I'll be back to modify this review should anything crop up. But for now, it seems to me that the AR390 is basically the tried and true AR383 internals with lots of improvements that address some of the complaints listed in the various AR383 reviews.
